SCG HOME Experience Successfully Finds Sustainable and Practical Housing Designs for Older Adults Through ‘SCG HOME Experience Design Contest 2024’, Supporting Thai Designers to Become Professionals

SCG HOME Experience, in collaboration with ThaiHealth and CDC, selected 12 finalists in the ‘SCG HOME Experience Design Contest 2024’, searching for the best housing designs that sustainably address the living needs of older adults and promote healthy living for all generations under one roof. In the student category, Atsachi Thetsakorn and Phon-athip Thongphrueksalai, the “Billy and Tommy” team from King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, won first place. In the professional architect-freelance category, only a second-place award was given to Anan Luangphon. The contest aimed to develop practical housing designs while supporting Thai architectural design toward professional sustainability.

Thankwin Buddimee, Managing Director of SCG Experience Company Limited, revealed that the ‘SCG HOME Experience Design Contest 2024’ attracted numerous applications from student designers and professional architects, both individuals and groups. All housing designs were presented under the concept of sustainable living for older adults, incorporating Care Design principles to apply proper design principles and appropriate materials for seniors. A panel of experts from SCG HOME Experience, Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), Crystal Design Center, and Integrated Field selected only 12 designs that met the criteria to advance to the final round, competing for prizes worth over 150,000 baht.

In the final round, the 12 finalists presented their designs based on assigned criteria, providing detailed explanations of their work. The judging committee emphasized design criteria including creative design according to ‘UD Design & Sustainable Living Design’ principles, appropriate integration of SCG HOME Experience and Crystal Design Center products, feasibility for development into standard construction plans within the specified budget, and creative design that optimizes available space.

“We prioritize not only homeowners, architects, and designers but also architecture students by encouraging new-generation students to apply what they’ve learned to develop real-world projects, creating income while still studying to help them grow professionally through this competition,” said Thankwin. “By focusing on the concept of Sustainable Living, designs must be suitable for both elderly and other family members, ensuring safety in home spaces while being practically implementable. These designs can be further developed into ideas and knowledge for the general public who want to improve their living spaces for safety and health.”

Associate Professor Dr. Chumket Sawangcharoen from the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Thammasat University, representing ThaiHealth, stated that the competition’s focus on sustainable lifestyle design, wellness, and addressing aging trends aligns with ThaiHealth’s vision of creating lifestyles, societies, and environments that support good health. He believes that well-designed homes that meet the competition’s objectives will promote better physical and mental health for Thais of all ages and genders.

Napaporn Thongpoon, Director of Sales & Product at Crystal Home from Crystal Design Center, shared that CDC, as Thailand’s first comprehensive furniture and home decoration design center, recognizes the importance of home-related design, particularly SCG HOME Experience’s housing design competition now in its second year. CDC provided space for the final round judging to showcase the designs amid CDC’s design atmosphere and participated in the judging panel. CDC has consistently supported SCG HOME Experience activities and emphasizes house design to fulfill customer needs while establishing CDC as a comprehensive center for home service experts.

In the final round results, the student category’s first prize went to the “Billy and Tommy” team (Atsachi Thetsakorn and Phon-athip Thongphrueksalai from King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok) for their work “Rudu,” featuring outstanding multipurpose area design. In the professional architect-freelance category, only a second-place award was given to Anan Luangphon for “CALM HOME,” recognized for its excellent functional connection of interior spaces.

“The success of SCG HOME Experience Design Contest 2024 goes beyond creating competition-winning house designs; it elevates design work at the higher education level to professional standards, strengthening the capabilities of Thai architects to address changing living needs according to sustainable trends,” Thankwin concluded. “We believe this will be an important step in the future development of housing to create better living environments, aligning with SCG Group’s main commitment to sustainability.”
