Bangkok – 26 July 2022 – Lion (Thailand) has partnered with SCG Chemicals or SCGC to develop green packaging with SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM. For the first time in Thailand, the collaboration is to pilot the use of “PAO” packaging for eco-friendly liquid laundry detergent formulated with SCGC’s RECYCLE solution High Quality Odorless Post-Consumer Recycled Resin (PCR) for goods that require specific scent retention. In addition, it has developed a shower cream packaging for “Shokubutsu” in which the bottle created from REDUCE solution, reducing the amount of materials used, and the refill pouch created from RECYCLABLE solution, easy to be recycled. This concrete partnership is a way to advance the sustainability policies of both companies, which encourage resource efficiency based on the circular economy principles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while still maintaining the packaging properties with no negative impacts on the contents. In this sense, Lion will start offering environmentally friendly packaging in July.
Somsak Srisaardruk, SPC Business Executive Manager of Lion (Thailand) said, “Lion (Thailand) establishes the business development direction ‘Technology for health in all policies’, developing product with care for consumers, society and the environment. The collaborative effort with SCGC to transform packaging to be more eco-friendly by using the solutions from SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM including, High Quality PCR, reducing material used, and designing for recyclability, is one of the approaches to support Lion’s aim of attaining zero net emissions of greenhouse gases and eliminating the use of virgin plastic in packaging by 2050. The piloted packaging includes “PAO” liquid laundry detergent bottle and shower cream “Shokubutsu” in both bottle and refill pouch. All packaging has been quality-tested to guarantee that it has no impact on the contents. Products packaged in environmentally friendly bottles and pouches will be available in July and August, respectively. There are also future plans to expand such implementation to other Lion’s products as a part of the effort to create a sustainable environment for the planet”.
Tanawong Areeratchakul, President of SCG Chemicals or SCGC said, “SCGC operates in accordance with ESG and SDGs to develop innovative green polymer materials based on the principles of the circular economy. The goal is to increase green polymer output to 1 million tons per year by 2030. Moreover, SCGC is the first company in Thailand that developed High Quality Odorless PCR. This collaboration with Lion to create eco-friendly packaging with SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM solutions is the first time the High Quality Odorless PCR has been introduced. Lion has piloted the concept with “PAO” liquid laundry detergent and plans to expand it to other products in the future. We developed this innovation specifically for products that emphasize odor qualities while maintaining the entire spectrum of packaging properties and having no effect on product content. The solutions from SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM meet the needs of brand owners and consumers, improve resource efficiency, reduce waste volume, and lower greenhouse gas emissions in line with sustainable development principles”.
The partnership to develop eco-friendly products between Lion and SCGC has incorporated solutions from SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM in three areas (1) Reduce – by using high quality PCR manufactured with SMXTM Technology with exceptional strength in packaging production, which helps lower the use of plastic resins while maintaining all other properties; (2) Recyclable – by design with recyclability in mind in which the company launches an end-to-end collaboration with business partners to bring about recyclable packaging solution to make flexible packaging more recyclable; and (3) Recycle – to transform post-use household plastic into High Quality PCR to cut waste volume and reduce resource usage. Apart from the above three solutions, SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM has a renewable solution that makes bio-compostable plastic and plastic from renewable resources.
