SCGC Partners with DMCR to Tackle Marine Waste with Up-Scale and Up-Speed Strategies, Delivering Latest Floating Litter Trap to Prevent Waste from Reaching Ocean

Bangkok, Government Complex – 21 January 2025: SCG Chemicals or SCGC, a leading integrated polymer business for sustainability, led by Namthip Samphowprasert, Brand Management and Social Inclusion Director, in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, represented by Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, joined efforts to brainstorm strategies for restoring and safeguarding marine ecosystems, as well as tackling the issue of marine waste. The initiative emphasizes “Up-Scale” and “Up-Speed” strategies to accelerate and expand the impact of collaborative projects between SCGC and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, such as floating litter traps, fish homes, and mangrove reforestation.

As part of this effort, SCGC has delivered 25 units of its latest model of floating litter traps, the “SCGC-DMCR Litter Trap Gen 3,” to the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. These traps will be deployed at river mouths and canals to intercept floating debris before it reaches the ocean. From 2020 to 2024 (as of December 2024), SCGC has provided over 50 floating litter traps installed across 17 provinces, which have collectively reduced land-based waste flowing into the sea by more than 90 tons. This initiative contributes significantly to preventing pollution and enhancing biodiversity within marine ecosystems.

The latest innovation in floating litter traps, the SCGC-DMCR Litter Trap Gen 3, has been designed to enhance efficiency and utilize new materials to reduce energy consumption. The litter trap’s weight has been reduced by more than 50%, making it easier and faster to assemble and install. This improvement allows for larger quantities to be transported in a single trip, which helps lower energy use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Each litter trap can support over 700 kilograms of waste and has a lifespan of more than 25 years, even when exposed to direct sunlight. This durability is attributed to the use of special-grade HDPE plastic, the same material used in SCGC Floating Solar Solutions, which is robust, long-lasting, and fully recyclable.

SCGC has collaborated with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and several partners, including The Youth Fund Association, The Federation of Thai Industries, the Petrochemical Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries, the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, the Pollution Control Department, and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW), to advance marine protection efforts continuously. Leveraging its expertise in research and development, SCGC has developed “Innovation for Better Marine” solutions, such as floating litter traps and SCGC fish homes, as well as co-founding the ” Nets Up” network, a circular economy model for marine sustainability that transforms discarded fishing nets into marine materials, a new alternative created through innovative recycling methods. Furthermore, SCGC has organized regular beach clean-up activities with its volunteer employees. Over the past year, more than 2,000 volunteers participated in these initiatives, successfully collecting over 3 million tons of waste from beaches.
