SCG Partners with DMCR to Deliver Floating Litter Traps, Advancing Marine Waste Solutions

SCG, in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), is advancing sustainable marine environmental restoration through the “Participatory and Sustainable Management of Trang River Estuary and Coastal Waste” project by delivering 12 units of “SCGC – DMCR Litter Trap Gen 3” floating waste collection buoys for installation at 12 locations around Thung Song Municipality, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, which serves as a crucial headwater source of the Trang River. The system aims to collect waste before it flows into the sea. The buoys are manufactured from special-grade HDPE plastic pellets, designed to last over 25 years, with a capacity of up to 700 kg per unit. The project emphasizes collaboration between government, private sector, and communities to systematically manage marine waste from upstream to downstream, restoring ecosystems, reducing coastal waste burden, and sustainably protecting marine life.

Dr. Chana Poomee, Chief Sustainability Officer, SCG stated that environmental operations are a key mission for SCG, focusing on sustainable resource management alongside community strengthening through participatory processes. SCG has implemented the “Rak Phu Pha Maha Nathi” project, which encompasses water resource and upstream forest restoration, sustainable agricultural water management, and coastal ecosystem restoration through various activities such as mangrove planting, seagrass cultivation, artificial reef construction, and coral house installation to enhance the abundance of Thai seas and support traditional fishing communities’ livelihoods. Another important initiative is the participatory and sustainable river estuary and coastal waste management project, where SCG collaborates with DMCR to oversee operations in the Trang River area. This project is part of SCG’s commitment to promoting Inclusive Green Growth through cooperation with government, private sector, and civil society to reduce marine waste, restore and maintain marine and coastal ecosystems sustainably through 5 key approaches. SCG works with communities to build awareness about community waste management and provide knowledge about waste separation at source for production into RDF fuel at the Thung Song cement plant, which helps reduce landfill waste and generate income for communities. The project also incorporates Drone Solution technology for surveying and monitoring the overall waste situation in the Trang River to understand actual site conditions, limitations, and use spatial data for effective planning with local network partners for litter trap installation. In 2024, over 1,100 tons of community waste entered the RDF system, reinforcing the Inclusive Green Growth concept of creating good environmental conditions alongside sustainable economics.

Kasidis Sangchan, Director of the Sanitation Engineering Division, Thung Song Municipality, stated that currently, Thung Song Municipality generates approximately 40 tons of municipal solid waste daily, mostly organic waste (wet waste). In the canal tributaries within the municipality area, during rainy season floods, some waste often escapes into waterways and gets stuck in pipes, causing drainage problems. The floating litter traps serve as another tool to catch waste in canals, reducing the impact of waste flowing into the sea.

Thanakorn Thong-in, Senior District Officer of Thung Song District, expressed gratitude to all sectors participating in driving the project forward and encouraged networks and communities that play important roles in caring for local resources.

The delivery of the SCGC – DMCR Litter Trap Gen 3 floating litter traps represents another significant milestone for SCG, which not only develops advanced environmental technology but also advances collaboration to pass on a good environment to future generations sustainably, Dr. Chana Phumy concluded.
