“Low Carbon Cement” – An Eco-Friendly Choice: Harudot Café’s Pivotal Transformation Toward a New Chapter in Green Society

The cement industry ranks among the industrial sectors with the highest carbon dioxide emissions. However, change can begin with selecting environmentally friendly construction materials. SCG has moved forward with producing Low Carbon Cement, designed to reduce environmental impact during the production process and decrease carbon dioxide emissions without compromising quality and strength. This initiative aims to elevate the construction industry toward truly sustainable practices, as the challenge lies not in technology but in the courage to implement change. Every decision you make represents vital power in driving a low-carbon society into reality.

Harudot Dares to Change: A New Story with Earth-Friendly Materials

When environmental concerns are no longer distant matters, construction materials have become a small starting point for change at Harudot Khaoyai by Nana Coffee Roasters. This stylish café conceals earth-friendly stories within every line of its concrete structure, utilizing green innovation through SCG’s Low Carbon Cement that reduces carbon dioxide emissions during the production process. The space is designed to be beautiful, functional, and environmentally sustainable simultaneously.

Ornya Asavanives, owner of Harudot Khaoyai by Nana Coffee Roasters, explains: “Good materials are the foundation of everything. When we choose well, we are also choosing for the planet. Initially, I hesitated to use Low Carbon Cement because it was a new material we had never seen used before. However, IDIN Architect and SCG conducted extensive research. When making the decision, we discussed as a family that this cement seemed destined for our use, with colors that matched our store and aligned with our desired theme. Most importantly, we believed in SCG’s quality and product development approach, viewing it as beneficial for the world’s future. We decided to try it, and it became a pilot project using SCG’s Low Carbon Cement.”

Harudot Khaoyai serves as an experimental pilot project using Low Carbon Cement LC3 in Natural Clay color for building surface work. The material’s properties were tested by casting it as the surface of the main structure, consisting of 10-centimeter-thick concrete. Subsequently, portions of the surface were chipped away to reveal the internal stone texture.

Reducing Carbon Helps the Planet – Quality Strength Meets Standards

Jiradej Hongsagul, Managing Director of IDIN Architects, notes that the challenge involved constructing a building almost entirely from concrete, with visible walls being concrete throughout the structure. This approach could impact both budget and construction work. However, while exploring suitable exposed concrete options, Low Carbon Cement was introduced at the perfect timing. The cement’s color resembles coffee – a brownish orange that appears orange or slightly pink when exposed to sunlight, creating a color that perfectly links with the brand’s identity. Some people might find this unfamiliar, as they expect cement to be gray.

“For me, if it functions the same way, has equal strength, and helps reduce carbon for the planet, it is a good material that must be used. We collaborated with SCG throughout the process. I even visited their factory and experimented with adding coffee, but too much affected the strength. Therefore, we used the original formula that already provided the desired color and had various test results supporting its strength. I believe that without starting with experimental projects, significant changes would not occur.”

Everyone is Part of Making the World Better

Pawat Sukhprasert, Marketing & Sales Decorative Product Strategy Manager at SCG, concludes: “Everyone participates in making the world better, whether as manufacturers, users, homeowners, or designing architects. Harudot Khaoyai’s transformation began from small changes where everyone – owners, designers, and SCG – contributed to changing everything together toward a sustainable future. Low Carbon Cement represents a new alternative material that is strong, durable, and beneficial to the environment. Using one ton of cement equals planting an additional 30 trees, and using 1,000 tons of cement equals planting 30,000 trees, equivalent to a large forest.”

Amid major transformations, SCG is committed to seriously transitioning toward a low-carbon cement industry to drive actual Net Zero goals, adhering to the principle that everyone is part of the change. Throughout this period, SCG has built cooperation with various government and private sector organizations, utilizing communication and technology to continuously address environmental problems, creating sustainable results for the world and society in the long term.
