Oneness Team – Understanding Racial Differences to Create Opportunities in New Markets
One example of understanding diversity and turning it into opportunity is the Oneness team, which formed from the collaboration of several SCG companies: Cement and Green Solutions handling cement export operations, SCG International managing international trade, and SCGJWD handling cross-border transportation. The Oneness team has the mission of introducing low-carbon cement to cross-continental markets. This sounds exciting because it involves frequent international travel, but in reality, this team faces pressure and challenges in pitching to customers who differ from them in race, culture, and language, amid fierce competition from numerous competitors.
After studying and understanding customer culture, they developed relationship-building strategies to bridge differences and gain additional insights. They invited customers to visit their green factories and arranged activities that appeal to people from different cultures, such as watching Thai boxing, city cycling tours, and using these close interactions to discuss and learn customer needs until they captured the insight that customers were not interested in price but focused heavily on product quality and flexible transportation. The team used this analysis to develop strategies and ultimately win over customers by pitching at prices significantly higher than competitors and closing deals with long-term contracts lasting up to three years.
The Oneness team emphasizes that their mission succeeded by adjusting their attitude to a “Can-do Attitude,” not viewing differences as limitations, and moving forward to create unstoppable fighting spirit where everything becomes an opportunity for learning and growth.
ZUPPORTS – From Diverse, Cross-Functional Teams to Innovation That Truly Delivers
Who would think that a team consisting of an engineer who transitioned to finance work, a factory engineer with a personal business importing and selling goods in Thailand, and a lawyer who crossed over to work in international logistics would combine forces to create a startup in international transportation management that is growing steadily?
The heart of the Zupports team is “diversity” – not just in educational background or job function, but including different perspectives, which became crucial power in developing business concepts that truly address market needs. Along the way, they dared to pivot their original business idea using three important decision criteria: First, the problem must be genuinely important – it must be a real pain point that customers face. Second, the market must be large enough – there must be opportunities for growth and scaling. Third, the team must be able to solve that problem – they must have direct experience and deep understanding of the matter.
From small beginnings, ZUPPORTS has now spun off from SCG to become the ZUPPORTS Online Freight platform that helps businesses reduce processes and transportation costs internationally by up to 24%. It is a comprehensive system that integrates essential tools including FREIGHT BIDDING, BILLING, and CARGO TRACKING all in one place.
Additionally, they have implemented AI OCR technology to verify important documents such as invoices and bills of lading, helping reduce administrative burden, increase accuracy, and reduce processing time. Currently, ZUPPORTS has over 100 importer-exporter companies and over 200 freight forwarders actively using the system, with plans to continue expanding usage.
