CPAC, a subsidiary of SCG, partners with Metropolitan Electricity Authority to pilot Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) technology as replacement for cast iron manhole covers, upgrading underground electrical conduit systems in road surfaces

CPAC (Concrete Products and Aggregate Company Limited), a subsidiary of SCG, led by Mr. Surachai Nimla-or, Chief Executive Officer of SCG Cement & Green Solution Business at SCG, together with Mr. Wilas Chaloysut, Governor of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in research and development of manhole covers and frames for underground electrical conduit systems in road surfaces using Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) technology to replace traditional cast iron manhole systems.

The new technology features special concrete formulations mixed with high-quality steel fibers, offering exceptional strength and durability with load-bearing capacity of up to 40 tons based on EN 124 standard compression testing for manhole covers. The UHPC covers are 30% lighter than traditional cast iron covers and can be installed easily and conveniently using specialized lifting equipment that ensures worker safety. Additionally, the manufacturing process reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 300 kilograms per cover compared to traditional cast iron covers, while addressing issues of manhole cover theft, noise reduction when vehicles pass over them, and decreased traffic accidents caused by damaged iron covers.

This collaboration represents a joint effort to develop modern technology using Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) to elevate construction standards for underground electrical conduit systems in road surfaces. The initiative aims to enhance safety for all road users and aligns with CPAC’s business approach of developing products through innovation and environmentally friendly services to achieve Net Zero goals and create a sustainable green society.
