Wirote Rattanachaisit, President of SCG Smart Living and Chairman of the Circular Economy in Construction Industry (CECI) Group, along with 38 network companies, attended the 2nd Annual Meeting in 2024 at SCG Headquarters in Bang Sue. The meeting focused on finding ways to elevate the construction industry through green innovation, efficient material use following circular economy principles, and carbon reduction for a sustainable world. Expert speakers were invited to provide insights on environmentally friendly building design aimed at achieving Net Zero.
Wirote stated, “SCG recognizes the importance of construction moving towards Net Zero in line with Inclusive Green Growth. We initiated the CECI group to exchange knowledge and develop approaches in collaboration with 38 leading organizations in the construction industry since 2561 (2018). Our goal is to concretely elevate the Thai construction industry to grow sustainably according to circular economy principles, through Smart Design and Green Innovation that are environmentally conscious and resource-efficient, creating collaborative carbon reduction through green innovation.”
The meeting featured two experts in green building design:
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daranee Jarermit, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at Thammasat University, who presented on designing buildings towards Net Zero. She discussed the critical role of design stages in construction project sustainability, embodied carbon, methods to reduce carbon from construction processes, and approaches to implementing Net Zero design concepts at urban and community levels.
- Dr. Vikrom Laovisuttichai, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University, who shared insights on Modular Construction. He used Hong Kong as an example, highlighting initial construction challenges, solutions, and opportunities for developing Modular Construction.
SCG operates under the Inclusive Green Growth approach, focusing on business growth alongside global sustainability. This includes implementing circular economy concepts through collaboration with leading partners in the construction industry. The network comprises real estate developers, architectural and construction consulting firms, manufacturers, construction contractors, and service providers managing construction waste.
The group has grown from 12 initial members to 38 current members, generating numerous concrete projects using innovation to manage and repurpose construction waste. For example, they’ve pioneered BIM (Building Information Modeling) in projects like King Bridge Tower, implementing the technology from design and procurement to construction stages to reduce resource use, on-site waste, and project timelines.
SCG has been a consultant in creating circular economy models, adapting the “10 Circular Business Models for More Sustainable Construction” by Roland Berger, and providing guidance on implementing circular economy principles in various projects.
